Carpentry Sessions, Reducing Waste

We were told this week that we're really good at saving wood from landfill and repurposing.

What a compliment!

Waltham Forest is famous for its endless construction projects. New people move in, redo their homes, and skip piles of perfectly good wood. Meanwhile, timber has never been more expensive. We've seen community projects order from two plus hours away just to save money, while here in Waltham Forest, there's an abundance right on our doorstep. If we work together with the resources we have, we can make a real difference.

And so, at our first carpentry session this post August, we did exactly that. We worked with discarded scaffolding boards and beautiful timber that had been bought new for someone's garden, which they had surplus of. We even used a log from the tree that was cut down (see our previous post) to add that natural touch.

It was short notice, but at the last minute we managed to get a full house. And to everyone we work with who keeps talking about reaching marginalised communities, we did just that. People who would probably never step foot in projects like this came along, and had a fantastic time. One piece of feedback said it all:

"I learnt how to use so many different tools, and completed a project for the community with others. I really enjoyed it."

"Masha’Allah, an amazing opportunity volunteer, learn a new skill, and work as a team with others. "

The instructor was a very kind warming individual. The place in general was a great place for community spirits."

Come over to the space to see what was made,  they got a lot done in just a few hours!
